We’re Maddie Cataldo and Maya Nefs-two friends who met playing hockey at CU Boulder and quickly bonded over a shared passion for adventure, sustainability, and a love of the outdoors. Together, we set out to build something that sparks real impact.

Blazin’ Joe began when Maddie launched the company during her college years, inspired by experiences like CU’s Female Founder Challenge, the Boulder Small Business Development Accelerator, and a social impact program in South Africa. Maya joined the team in 2024, bringing expertise in clean water innovation, sustainability consulting, and operational strategy skills that have been instrumental in shaping our growth.

United by our mission to innovate and inspire, we recognized the untapped potential of coffee chaff-a byproduct of coffee roasting typically discarded in landfills. By upcycling this material, we’ve created eco-friendly firelogs and starters that burn 2X hotter, longer and cleaner than seasoned wood.
